Insight for Choosing Universities
Post by Andrew Akbashev
Getting a PhD from MIT / Stanford / Harvard is great.
But do you know what’s better?
– Finding a highly supportive advisor.
– Joining a lab with an amazing work environment
– Doing research in a very exciting topic
– Having people who support your career growth
– Having time to spend with family & friends
Yes, the name of your university can help.
It can open some doors and give your CV a bit of weight.
But your advisor, lab and research topic will contribute a lot more to your happiness and accomplishments (in the long run).
I know many examples of students from not-so-top universities becoming successful & happy scientists and engineers.
I also heard of stories from top universities where PhDs were unhappy and even quit their program.
📍 My point is:
There is only one life to live.
There is only one PhD to get.
Your PhD is not just a degree – it’s a transformative journey.
Don’t just chase the brand.
Instead, chase the best colleagues & mentors.
